Nationwide Transmission Network

Bangla Phone has managed to build one of the largest nationwide fiber optic transmission networks in the country by making substantial investments since its inception in 2004.

It is designed to provide a robust, dependable and scalable nationwide fiber optic transmission network with adequate built-in redundancy up to the service end. Sufficient redundancies using ring topology have been built-in to make the network efficient and highly reliable.

Along with state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited, BPL is the only other company providing submarine cable backhaul connectivity for the domestic part.

Extensive coverage: The transmission backbone network is spread over 15,500 kilometers, covering 60 out of the 64 district headquarters. Extensive “Metro Ring” networks have been built in all major metropolitan cities and other major district towns, providing seamless connectivity with last-mile solutions.

Metro Rings have been built in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Comilla, Feni, Cox’sBazar, Khulna, Rajshahi, Bogra, and Jessore cities. Furthermore, thousands of km fiber optic cables cover Rajshahi, Khulna, Jessore, Rangpur, Natore, Gaibanda, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Sirajganj, Chapai Nawabganj, Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Brahmanbaria, Pabna, Natore, Joypurhat Barisal, Cox’s Bazar, Habiganj, Mouluvibazar, Sunamganj, Narsingdi, Mymensingh, Tangail, Ishwardi, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Manikganj, Kushtia, Faridpur, Benapole, Lalmonirhat, Rajbari, Magura, Naogaon, Lakshmipur, Naogaon, Meherpur, Barguna, Jenaidah, Patuakhali, Chouadanga, Jhalokhati, Bhola, Shariatpur, Gopalpur, Jamalpur, Munshiganj, Netrokona, Shahjadpur, Pirojpur, Chandpur, Narail, Gopalganj and Bandarban cities and towns.

The transmission network has more than 800 Points of Presence (POPs) in Dhaka city, 100= in Chittagong City, 50+ in Sylhet city and 400+ POPs in other cities and towns.

Redundancy ensured: BPL only uses Telecom Grade equipments to ensure quality. To allow for path redundancy, the optical fiber connectivity is of redundant type single-mode fiber run in different route/direction for path protection and terminated to SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) Multiplexer and protected by Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP) ring. The redundancy is ensured up to the customer end.

Automatic switch protection: The network uptime is 99.95 per cent throughout the year, with automatic switch protection. The transmission network is designed in such a way that when a link is down, it will take 25ms or less to automatically switch to an alternate link. However, as per International Telecommunication Union standard, up to 50ms is acceptable.

Further expansion: BPL will further expand its transmission network by another 10000 km within the next 24 months. In addition, the number of support centers will also be increased during the same period.

Proactive monitoring: Bangla Phone has a state-of-the-art Network Management Center equipped with world-class equipment and NMS Software. NMS software has:

  • Integrated functionality of network management
  • Fast and intelligent discovery functionality

If any fiber fault occurs, we can promptly correct the fault by our pro-active monitoring system without hampering the service. In addition, regular repair and maintenance of this vast transmission network is done from the regional offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Comilla, Bogra, Khulna, Cox’s Bazar and Feni.

Service protection: We have designed our backbone infrastructure with multi-core fiber optic cable, containing various loops and branches providing data redundancy. In the case of a cable failure or cut, data is automatically re-routed to ensure that data packets reach their intended recipients. Bangla Phone is using several different protection methodologies and switching techniques to ensure redundancy. Our protection schemes are:

  • 1+ 1 Linear MS-Protection: 1 active line and 1 stand by line
  • 1: N Linear MS-Protection: N active line and 1 stand by line
  • Path Protection ring (1 fiber in the ring is the active fiber, another is protection fiber)
  • MSP ring ( Part of traffic in 1 fiber is active and another part is protection for another fiber)
  • Redundant architecture ensuring 99.999% link uptime.
  • Use of Umbrella NMS software for monitoring at granular levels of every single board, port & equipment.
  • Protection Switching within 50ms ( As per ITU-T Standard)
